A-level results 2024: Grades rise again for students

October 10, 2024

Original Article:

These are all a series of exams, tests and qualifications that students aged 16 to 18 take in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Results released so far show that the number of students getting top grades has risen from last year and remains higher than before the Covid pandemic.

Overall, grades for A-level, T-level and B-Tecs were expected to be about the same as in 2019 - the year before exams were affected by the pandemic - but the results show a different story.

Exams were cancelled for students in 2020 during Covid. After this, there were a few years where students received higher grades for their subject results.

This trend has continued, with 27.8% of A-levels awarded either an A or A* overall this year, up from 27.2% in 2023 and above 25.4% in 2019.

When looking at each nation separately, there are slightly different results.

England saw an increase in A or A* results, but this was down from last year in both Wales and Northern Ireland.

The most popular subjects taken at A-level were maths, psychology and biology.

Students in Scotland already received the results for their National, Higher and Advanced Higher exams last week.

The grades could help students get their apprenticeship, job or university place of choice.

Information seen by the BBC so far shows that 82% of students have managed to get into their first choice of university - an 3% increase from last year.
