The number of high school graduates and technical college graduates in Germany fell slightly last year. In 2023, a total of 381,000 students acquired their university or technical college entrance qualification, 3,700 or one percent fewer than in 2022, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday in Wiesbaden. Although the number of the relevant age group of 17 to 19 years has increased by a good two percent in the population, this is due to Ukrainian war refugees of this age and is not reflected in high school graduates.

Almost all federal states were affected by the decline in the number of high school graduates; with a decline of ten and nine percent, the declines were greatest in Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen. Hesse had a ten percent increase in the number of school leavers with university entrance qualifications, while there were slight increases in Saxony-Anhalt and Berlin.

Four fifths of school leavers completed the general Abitur and one fifth the specialist Abitur. According to statistics, the proportion of women at the general Abitur clearly outweighs young men at 55 percent to 45 percent; at the technical Abitur the gender ratio was balanced.
